Reducing energy cost

Budgets are tight, but schools still have to spend a huge amount of money to pay the bill for energy costs which are always on the rise. It is the second largest operational cost for school – after teachers’ salaries. Because of these losses to the schools’ budget, there is a to solve this problem. Schools need to replace their lighting system into LED lighting as its surprising energy economizing. Thanks to LEDs, energy costs can be cut by more than half - sometimes up to 70%.

Schools nowadays usually use fluorescent tubes for lighting and many of the education facilities also still operate using the same one or even incandescent. Theoretically, the lifespan of this light lasts about 10,000 hours, however, in fact, it decreases due to a result of frequent switching (turning on and off). In contrast, LED light’s lifespan are very diversified which ranges from 25, 000 hours to 200, 000 hours and even more. Furthermore, it does not require much maintenance than other lamps: Especially, when using LED lights, customers sometimes receive lots of service discount available nationwide. Moreover, replacing fluorescent lights in some teaching supplies such as reflectors, lenses or sensor and so on by using LEDs for them also reduce energy and its costs more drastically.

Increasing Students’ Health and Wellbeing

As mentioned above, fluorescent lamps were still mostly used in every school and university. It does not give out a steady light. That causes the lousy effect for eyes when studying under those flash as the eyes always modify itself to see everything around clearly, which mostly leads to myopic. Furthermore, the fluorescent tube also aggravates the autism to some students suffering this. These students are exceedingly sensitive with the flicker from fluorescent lighting. It can cause a bad headache, eyestrain and so on, which annoys those students’ path at school.

With the development of technology, LED lights appear and are composed of two types of semiconducting material. That is the reason why there is no warm up or cool down period. They produce steady light without flicker, so they bring more benefits to the students and teachers such as anti – eyestrain and anti – myopia. The view from LED lights is quite the same as the natural light which gives students the sense of comfort.

Furthermore, with the type “tuneable” LED lights which can adjust their colour temperature, it brings more efficiency for students and teachers while studying and working at the school. In 2016, Kyungah Choi and Hyeon-Jeong Suj conducted a study and published in the journal Optics Express. The purpose of this study is to figure out the effect of lighting colour on the productivity and concentration of students. The researchers separated 54 students in 4th grade while having maths test into two rooms with different types of light. One room light with tuneable LED light which can switch from 3500 K (warm) to 5000 K (neutral) and 6500 K (cold). Another room is with a standard fluorescent lamp. The results showed surprisingly that student in tuneable LED light-room concentrated better and even got the higher score on the test while being under 6500K light. After the study, researchers concluded that 3500 K warm light is the best fit for relaxing time such as break time. For some activities such as reading a book, the school should use LED light with 5000 K colour. About 6500 K, it needs to be used during some intensive courses or exams which require more attention.
